Intellectual Theological Thread Empty Intellectual Theological Thread

Post by Dominik Mon May 25, 2009 11:01 pm

Just curious about people's beliefs (I'm doing some research into belief vs. non-belief and want to see what the wasteland of the internet is like). Obviously don't post if you're not comfortable sharing, but yes, I am a nosy prick. So vote, because as we all now, simple vote tallying is much better than in-depth discussion.

Hmmm, I consider myself to be quite a radical atheist (and those who know me can concur), but I wouldn't go as far as to make that statement. I do believe, however, that intelligent people who are genuinely religious seem to be avoiding the application of their intelligence to their spiritual beliefs, most likely because of a cultural/psychological predisposition to belief and/or extensive indoctrination.

Wooh! I'm the only person who voted "Yes, and everyone who doesn't is going to spend eternity in hell." However I am not pushy about it, just caring and hopeful. You would never have known, until you asked. Wink

My skepticism says that polls reveal nothing of people's beliefs, for to know a true answer to the poll goes beyond the limitations of a multiple choice format.

meh, that's too complicated so I just chose "E"

The base of my life's philosophy is that I am certain that nothing is certain. As a result I doubt I shall ever commit myself to a religion, though I believe that a divine presence exists somewhere, though I accept that it is possible that such a being does not exist at all.

Intellectual Theological Thread Empty Re: Intellectual Theological Thread

Post by Emilio Sanchez Tue May 26, 2009 8:33 pm

No. I do not believe in God, and I'm not religious.

I am not religious because I feel religion is only meant to give people something to believe in and doesn't actually serve a purpose.

All religion does is divide people and give reasons for people to do certain things. It is absolutely pointless. Look at religions who do not want help from doctors etc. I was watching the news and a boy has cancer, but because they are a certain religion, they do not want to give him treatment for it. They feel it should just run it's course and his life is in Gods hands now. I mean come on, talk about bulls**t.

People spend their lives hopeing and praying for miracles from god... Only to get nothing.

To me, when your dead, your dead. There is no heaven and hell. Your just dead... Not existing anymore.

I actually knew 2 people. 1 was very religious and went to church every sunday. The other smoked, drinked, and treated everyone like crap.

The guy who was religious and went to church, got news that he had cancer at the age of 43. He died 2 years later.

The guy who smoked and drinked and treated everyone like crap. Lived to see his 92nd birthday.

Tell me how religion is of any importance?

I have no problem with those that are religious, I mean it's there choice. I just hate those that push their religions on others, asking why your not religious and how great it is to be religious etc. etc.

no I am an atheist.

It is just my teaching, and growing up in a suppressed country where religion is frowned upon

Also, i believe that Religion has caused more wars than any other reason there is.

I only picked that because I was forces to go into a Catholic High School (which isn't that bad except for having to take religion) and the people there always try and relate things to "God" and "miracles" and how they succeed because of them praying to "God". People on my religion class think I'm a freak and an idiot for not believing in a "God" but it provides me with great lulz and "debates".

I am a Deist, and proud of it.

I can't prove there's an afterlife... But I know it in my heart and soul.

No, I am an atheist.

I gave up trying to "convert" theists a while ago. No matter what type of science you throw at them, they won't change their beliefs. I'm not saying that's not smart; everyone is entitled to their own opinion. So seeing as my attempts at conversion failed, I don't try that much anymore.

Non-denominatial Christian, with the stressing of individual faith with a personal connection to God & his son

Sometimes I feel that church are for rich, snobbish people who only go just to be seen, with no real faith.

In my view (as a Christian) everybody has to realize that there are a million different views on every different aspect of Christianity and that usually it is only the radical Christians whose views give a bad impression on Christianity (for example evolution is accepted as a fact in many Christian circles and is even taught), I am not saying that this is the only reason we get knocked because the amount of backstabbing, grudges held, talking behind backs, plotting, lying and misrepresenting that happens within the Christian community disgusts me, I believe there is underlying truth in the bible and even if there is no God there are many good pointers to help us live by (dont steal, dont kill, respect authority, dont commit adultery, help the poor, respect the world and life, dont show off etc.)

Hmm, that probably means I've been exposed to too many ultra-Christians...

And yes, the Bible is quite a good read. I mean, just because you're atheist doesn't mean you can't read the Bible.

man when you go into the hardcore sciences it makes you realize the truth about a lot of religious stories causing me to become an atheist. Its also kind of sad because you realize what there is after this life. But of course I am open to what ever anybody believes and if you believe in an afterlife than stick to it, its kind of depressing knowing there is nothing after you die.
